Services

Located in the heart of SoHo, we provide a full spectrum of state- of-the-art healthcare
in obstetrics and gynecology for women throughout their lifecycle.

Obstetrics

With seven obstetricians and two midwives, our obstetrics practice is wide-ranging yet intimate and accessible.  At Downtown Women OB/GYN, we believe that your involvement in your own birth process is the first and most important step toward a safe and satisfying delivery.  To that end, we help you develop a birth plan that is consistent with your own needs and goals.  Because no two patients are alike, our approach to labor and delivery is equally as diverse.  While we support, for example, women who choose an epidural for pain relief, we are also advocates of labor support doulas, acupuncture and natural childbirth.  We have a low Cesarean section rate and we are supportive of vaginal birth after cesarean (VBAC) deliveries. We do not perform routine episiotomies and we are strong proponents of breastfeeding.

We are affiliated with Tisch Hospital at New York University Langone Medical Center.  As a New York State designated Regional Level III Perinatal Center, NYU is one of the premier hospitals in the nation, providing comprehensive maternal and newborn services by a renowned team of perinatologists and neonatologists.  NYU was also recently awarded the prestigious Baby-Friendly designation for supporting optimal care for infant feeding. For more information about having your baby at NYU, please visit: www.nyubaby.org.

We know that having your baby is one of the most extraordinary events in your life.  In an environment of mutual trust and respect, we are confident we will help you achieve the birth experience that you envision.

As part of our commitment to providing individualized, expert and compassionate care to women, we invite our patients to utilize our Reproductive and Perinatal Mental Health Program. We are full-spectrum, wellness focused healthcare providers and consider mental health support as an essential part of comprehensive health care. The director or the care manager may contact you throughout your pregnancy and after the birth of your child to support your general well-being and mental health. They will be available to address your needs and concerns during pregnancy and work with you to create and implement a plan for your postpartum support. They are also available to all patients along the reproductive spectrum from trying to conceive, infertility, or loss. They also work with patients struggling through perimenopause and menopause.

All Downtown Women patients are welcome to reach out to them for general questions, support, resources, groups, or individualized attention at any point. In addition to our support groups, therapy groups and individualized support, we can connect you to individual therapy or couple’s therapy.

Gynecology

At Downtown Women OB/GYN, we provide a full range of gynecologic services, from annual check-ups and routine Pap smears to procedures performed in our office or surgeries in the hospital.  We evaluate and treat women with abnormal Pap smears, abnormal human papilloma virus (HPV) tests, sexually transmitted infections, pelvic pain, fibroids, abnormal bleeding, infertility, and symptoms related to menopause and aging issues. We provide contraceptive counseling and family planning services, including insertion of IUDs.  We also perform diagnostic ultrasounds in our office utilizing state-of-the-art machines and the latest techniques available in the field of ultrasound medicine.

We are able to work so effectively because we have many gifted practitioners who work together as a team.  As a patient you have access to any of our providers. We share cases, discuss courses of treatment — whether routine or complicated — and take full advantage of each practitioner’s individual expertise in different areas.

Downtown Women OB/GYN is also proud of our leadership in providing compassionate healthcare that is sensitive to our community of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBTQ) patients.  Our LGBTQ patients value the ease and sensitivity with which our physicians and staff understand and attend to their specific needs.

Surgery

At Downtown Women OB/GYN, we offer a full range of surgical options to meet each patient’s individual needs.  Many surgical procedures, such as D&Cs and LEEP procedures, may be done in our office.  Minimally invasive surgical procedures such as laparoscopies are always considered whenever possible, as well as non-surgical alternatives.

For procedures in which hospitalization is recommended or necessary, our doctors perform a full range of gynecologic surgeries at Tisch Hospital at New York University Langone Medical Center.   As one of the premier medical centers in the country, we feel fortunate in our affiliation with the institution and its incomparable staff of health care professionals.  We have the highest regard for the hospital’s excellent anesthesiology and nursing staff.

Our surgical coordinator works directly with the hospital to schedule your procedure in a time frame that best fits your own schedule and your doctor’s recommendations.  Our billing staff will handle insurance issues and pre-authorizations.  We hope to make your surgical experience as seamless as possible.

Ultrasound

Downtown Women OB/GYN Associates is proud to offer both obstetric and gynecologic ultrasounds performed by highly skilled and accredited practitioners with years of experience employing the latest technology and equipment in the field.

Dr. Shelley Kolton has been performing gynecologic ultrasounds at Downtown Women since the 1990’s.  In 1990, she completed a one-year preceptorship in transvaginal sonography at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center.  She is an expert in the use of transvaginal sonography in gynecology and early obstetrics.  She also performs sonohysterograms (saline infusion sonograms) for our patients, which provide a more detailed evaluation of the uterine cavity.

Jessica Clark joined Downtown Women in 2014 as our sonogram technician. She trained at the Ultrasound Diagnostic School in Atlanta Georgia and has experience working with high-risk pregnancies and with gynecologic ultrasound. At Downtown Women, where Jessica focuses on obstetrical scans, our OB patients appreciate her warmth and her ability to put them at ease.
